If you love learning about all things extraterrestrial, then you’re sure to love relaxing with great films which are set in outer space. Here are just a few classics, which you certainly won’t want to miss..
2001: A Space Odyssey
Noted for its scientific accuracy, as well as its impressive soundtrack, 2001: A Space Odyssey is certainly one of the most critically acclaimed space-based films. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, and featuring very little dialogue, this film also features one of the most human computers seen on screen, HAL.
Mars Attacks!
Srarring Jack Nicholson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman and Danny DeVito (amongst others), Mars Attacks! is a sci-fi film which manages to incorporate surreal humour and political satire within its narrative. The film is based on a cult card game, but unlike those which you might encounter online. The cards depicted the invasion of Earth by alien lifeforms. Listen out for the strange alien laugh, which was created by reversing the sound of a duck’s quack.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
This 1977 film tells the classic story of one individual’s UFO encounter, as well as conspiracy cover-ups by institutions which are also aware of the encounters. Written and directed by Steven Spielberg, this film also featured some of the most advanced visual effects of its time.
Forbidden Planet
If you’re looking for a retro look at outer space, then you can’t go wrong with Forbidden Planet. This was the first ever science fiction film to be set entirely on another planet, far away from the planet earth, and widely acknowledge as being one of the most ground-breaking films of the 1950s. Starring Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis, the plot has been likened to that of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
