Actually, rockets do not harm our atmosphere very much. Their have been studies that show the amount of damage caused by space shuttle launches to the atmosphere is a tiny and negligible fraction of overal damage caused by other sources. Since space shuttles are no longer in service, regular rockets would have to do. Considering that most rockets today are more efficient than older space shuttles, I assume the damage would be even smaller.
Also, the microwaves would not cause extreme damage. The only thing it might do is excite water particles (make them move faster/heat them up.) This happens in household microwaves as well. The water particles in food are caused to move faster, and since the particles move faster the food is gaining heat. I think that the only damage the microwaves would do is to humans. As long as we stay away from the beam, we will be fine. I assume that if this technology is produced, the beam will be shot down at a sort of main receiver (satellite dish) far away from urban areas.

I think with current technology, launching all those panels into orbit, as well as launching spacecraft to install and repair those panels would be less cost efficient, and would do more environmental damage than using other sources of energy.

Also, sure ordinary satellites beam down microwaves, but those carry virtually no power. The beam sufficient enough to power a city, would, I am sure, do significant damage to the atmosphere, along with a host of other problems.

Its not that hard to install solar panels on existing structures. We got a kit and did it ourselves over the course of 2 weeks since we both work during the day.

This is very interesting concept. This is will solve our energy problem, if scientists can do that. Don't forget about technology abuse though.
